Trail of Tears

By |July 22nd, 2015|Syndicated Content|

This project reinterprets the famous story of “Trail of Tears." It is a modern movement performance involving an individual leading others along a path. He or she drops stones along the way, which the other performers -- who are barefoot -- must step on in order to continue. At the end of the procession, another performer collects the stones. His or her load becomes heavier with time, making their progress more difficult. The entire performance will take place in an outdoor urban environment.

The goal of the project is to make it speak to the world’s oppression in general. The one who leads the way symbolizes power, he is the oppressor. The followers represent the oppressed. The audience is invited to share the experience along with the movement artists by walking barefoot on the stone path as well.

The performance ends where it began. Everyone lifts some of the collected stones to place them on top of each other into the pile, which becomes a monument to the memory of the world’s aggression and a reminder for us to learn from our mistakes.
