Back in October and November of 2014, I worked with Jana...

Back in October and November of 2014, I worked with Jana Meier-Roberts at GQ Germany on new illustrated portraits for the December/January and February issues. These new issues would also herald a redesign of the magazine, featuring illustrated contributors portraits to be used in the sections that these specific individuals contributed in subsequent issues.

Jana was excited to utilize color in the portrait style we were using for the Deutscher Meister portraits in these new contributors portraits, but wanted us to shift the style of those Meister portraits to something new. I suggested a softer approach with graphite, and we both agreed that this would be a great new direction. The portrait of Cedric Hommel above from the February issue is an example of this new approach.

The three portraits beneath are of contributors, done for the December/January issue.

Thanks again to Jana for these past couple years — it’s been a wonderful journey working with you and the art department on these portraits!
