Specific Gravity #7997

48″ x 36″ acrylic on canvas

I’ve been doing a lot of Flying Women paintings for months. I’ve put some of them on my website in the Painting section, here.

I feel very driven to do these. This has happened to me many times in my life, when I feel absolutely driven to paint very specific stuff. When I first got sober, it was paintings of landscapes glimpsed out the mouth of a cave. Then I did sculptural jewelry of brides from the tops of wedding cakes wrapped in wire, Brides in Bondage, then really large sculptural paintings of vaginas, then psychedelic childhood self-portraits, then portraits of overlooked New Yorkers, then political cartoons of Sarah Palin…and now these.

These are, as I’ve written, a pretty much subconsciously-driven expression of my dismay about the election of trump. There’s something about these particualr symbols that I need to keep painting, it’s just sort of pouring out, all the time. So keep painting them I will, until I want to paint soemthing else.
