Apologies for not posting in April! Things were a bit crazy with, oh… just having my first child 🙂
Anyway, I was happy to receive a new assignment from the LA Times Sports section that dealt with how LA basketball fans are disappointed in the Lakers’ performance; yet, they are happy to cheer for the high-ranked LA Clippers, who usually perform poorly. The AD wanted to work with a ship for the imagery, and I was happy to do so. He also requested a final image using the Lakers uniform colors for the palette.
Here are the roughs I sent over; one of these was selected for a refined sketch. This is not my usual mode of operation, but the LA TImes’ ADs are happy to work this way and save time on sketches that will not be used.
Refined sketch for approval:
As you can see in the sketch and final image, there was an adjustment to the player’s jersey number as well as the addition of the Clipper’s logo to the ship’s flag. I guess the editors wanted team clarity as well as to not allude to a specific player (it makes sense as he should represent the team as a whole).
Here is a detail of the stranded player that may or may not be Mr. Kobe 🙂
Thanks for reading!
Enjoy the Day,
