I created this comic page with the title “La Llorona” for the book project “Greatest Hits” for Moga Mobo.

This comic magazine was founded and edited by the Berlin based comic artists and illustrators Titus Ackermann, Jonas Greulich and Thomas Gronle in the early 90’s and features comic art work in cooperation with local and international artists.

The magazine follows the motto “Comix for all” and so their editions are handed out for free in book stores, cafes and bars mostly in Berlin. (www.mogamobo.com)

They invited me to participate in the Project “Greatest Hits” featuring 100 classic and smashing hits, illustrated as comics, in 9 images, without using words.

The song I chose is: “La Llorona,” which was interpreted by various musicians amongst which the most famous interpretation is of the great singer Chavela Vargas. It tells the tragic Mexican legend of a (probably indigenous) woman that fell in love with a gentleman of a higher social class, and had children with him … but as the man never fully committed to her, the relationship got difficult and he finally left her.

Out of rage and despair, she took her children to the river, drowned them and then killed herself. Ever since, her restless soul is wandering around, and one can hear her endless crying (llorar) through the night, which causes fear and terror to children and adults….

The legend inspired art, music, literature and cinema.

The book “Moga Mobo Musik – Greatest Hits, Nr. 116″ will be presented for the first time at the International Comic Salon in Erlangen, Germany, the 16th of June 2022: Internationaler Comic-Salon Erlangen
