When my great grandparents, Peter Flynn and Bridget Keaveney Flynn, immigrated to America from Ireland, my great-grandfather came two years before the rest of the family. When Bridget and her children, including my grandfather, who was 17 at the time, prepared to leave their beloved home, Peter requested that she cut him a blackthorn stick (shillelagh) and bring it with her to America. When Bridget arrived in Tintah, Minnesota, with the children and their possessions, Peter was sorely disappointed in the size of the stick she had brought. She had cut one that was all together “too dainty” for his liking!
