Glue. Paper. Scissors. Here’s a collage of creatives from the Directory of illustration.

Style Feature: Collage. Remember cutting up your father’s newspaper when you were a kid? These 25 artists never put down their scissors, and instead became professionals in the art of taking things apart and putting them back together: collage. The word “collage” comes from the french verb ‘coller’, which means “to glue” or “to stick together”. As an art form, collage first became popular in the 20th Century, and continues to be a highly sought after style today in editorials, publishing, and advertising. Enjoy our gallery of collage artists, including highlighted work from: Ben Lewis Giles, Elizabeth Rosen, Laura Ladendorf, Sarah Arnett, and Jackie Parsons.

The collage often spills into other mediums such as sculpture, paint and illustration. His work is inspired from many different things such as color, nature, juxtaposition, children’s encyclopedias, repetition, and metamorphosis. Ben has focused on working with commercial commissions for several years, such as magazine editorials, fashion labels and advertising campaigns. Clients include: Google, Apple, New York Times Magazine, Vice Magazine, Wall Street Journal, GQ, Elle, Bloomberg Businessweek, and more.

Elizabeth Rosen is a trained graphic designer (BFA from Parsons) and a self-taught painter. This design background almost always permeates Elizabeth’s art, and the combination has influenced most aspects of her path as an artist. While most illustrators have one ‘look’ or style, Elizabeth creates with a wide range of styles and mediums. “There’s always some kind of order to things- a graphic simplicity- or organized chaos. I have a fascination with visual problem solving and some sort of grid to organize the various elements, and I often use typography as a primary or secondary element. Creating mixed-media pieces thrill me. Traditional painting with collaged elements, the juxtaposition of vintage items with contemporary ones, upcycling, and the hunt for interesting elements is certainly part of the fun. I truly love to get my hands dirty.”

Laura Ladendorf is an interdisciplinary artist with a long career in graphic design and illustration. In addition to traditional illustration modes she also works in printmaking and book arts. The “artist book” form offers a world of possibilities for illustrative play — mixing media and telling stories with every project. Her preferred media include pen and ink, water-based paints, relief printing — occasionally mixing it all together in collage. For finely detailed technical illustrations she uses digital software – Illustrator and Photoshop.
