THE WORK

Illustrator: Christian Dellavedova

Client: L’Espresso Magazine

Agent: AAA Rep

FROM THE ARTIST: “The art director of the Italian magazine, L’Espresso, Stefano Cipolla, contacted me with an assignment for the magazine. It is my first assignment for this publication. He asked me to illustrate an article on the new macro-mafia connections on the drug traffic in the Old Continent. I sent three different sketches to the editorial board, depicting three totally different ideas and representations, about the international drug traffic driven by the Dutch territories. Since I’m a flag fanatic, I used the color of the Dutch flag for the first two sketches and the game board idea (one of my great classics) for the last. They very much liked the idea of the “Risiko (Risk)” game board to represent the “catch a thief” between the international police force and the mafia. Basically, I kept the color of the game board, but I tried to reach the magazine needs in terms of palette, since we were illustrating a very serious issue. The art director was so enthusiastic about the new issue of the magazine, that he also made a blog about the issue and its creative flow, once it was published.”
