An announcement from artist Patrick George: “I’m excited to announce the imminent launch of a new book that’s been a year in the making – Eye Spy AnimalZ. As the name suggests, it’s an A-Z of animals which are discovered through die-cuts (holes in the paper). Books are great for telling stories but my interest has always been about creating a more interactive experience for the child, where they get a surprise by simply turning the page, revealing something unexpected.

I didn’t appreciate how challenging it would be designing a book with holes on every page – the shapes need to incorporate the illustrations when viewed from the front and the back, which also affecting the colour choices of the pages that appear through the holes. It was like designing a book and doing a Rubik’s cube simultaneously. It’s been my favourite to work on and really happy how the book has turned out. It’s taken a lot of time working with the printer to ensure the alignment and quality of the die-cuts are as neat as possible but I think it’s paid off.”
