I must admit, in recent weeks, I’m excited to add more “presence” in my life. And it is truly bringing me joy! In a time of hustle culture and being ‘busy’ or plugged in constantly I am on the search for some Zen time.
Here’s what I’ve been doing to achieve this:
⁃ I got a “dumb” phone. Yes, you read that right. I got a $100 flip phone to replace my old iPhone. I still occasionally carry my old phone to take pictures with or to listen to podcasts on. However, it has gifted me so much extra time to get work done, paint, and to just be present. Not everyone can do this, but you might be surprised at how freeing it is to turn off your ringer/notifications for a day or a few hours.
⁃ I’m using a sketchbook to make messes in. This is partly filling an assignment requirement and partly an escape. I’ve loved exploring new materials and getting thoughts down on paper. For years, I’ve used the iPad for sketching. This is just another step away from a screen. I encourage you if you are inclined, to take a sketchbook with you anywhere you are required to wait (think doctor’s office, DMV, etc.). It’s fun to be an observer.
⁃ I started writing letters to people I care about. How nice is it to get a letter in the mail (instead of a bill or a car warranty notice)? It’s equally enjoyable to write a letter. I always say, “I should write so-and-so.” Then I forget to do it, of course. Write to someone you love. They might just write you back! And if they don’t? That’s okay. They know you’re thinking of them!
⁃ Painting! This isn’t necessarily new but this year I have been shifting the focus of my business. (See video for a peek at what I am currently working on.) I’ve been hard at work behind the scenes and can’t wait to share more in the coming months.
All the above activities are helping me achieve this new body of work. I hope, that if you’re looking to achieve some of your own goals, you find it inspiring.
Best,
Paige
