THE WORK

Illustrator: Christian Dellavedova

Client: Internazionale Magazine

Agent: AAA Rep

From the Artist: “After lockdown ended, a Melbourne cinema showed a series of films by Hong Kong’s arthouse director Wong Kar-wai. Starting from this recent memory, Louisa Lim, author of ‘Indelible City: Dispossession and Defiance in Hong Kong,’ takes an opportunity to offer food for thought on the condition of the new Hong Kongers in exile. I was asked to illustrate this in Louisa’s brilliant article. I focused on the main issue of the article, working on a very simple concept playing with the Hong Kong flag for a somewhat Orwellian illustration that, I believe, makes the content of the delicate topic. The main idea was the screen darkly scanning the empty room of a movie theatre and the Orwellian eye looking at us through the Hong Kong flag, something that’s no more familiar or comforting.”
