Matt Griffin Visualizes Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem Trilogy for The Folio Society

From Dune to The Three-Body Problem: How Matt Griffin Captures 18 Million Years of Sci-Fi History
Represented by Shannon Associates, internationally acclaimed Irish artist, author, and illustrator Matt Griffin has partnered with The Folio Society to bring one of modern science fiction’s greatest achievements to life: a spectacular deluxe limited-edition box set of Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem trilogy.
Spanning 18 million years, Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award–winning masterpiece explores humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization and the ultimate fight for existence across time and space. Signed by both author Liu Cixin and artist Matt Griffin, this limited edition combines all three novels—The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End (translated by Ken Liu and Joel Martinsen)—alongside a new introduction by Liu never before published in English.
Where Physics Meets Speculative Design
Rooted in myth, science fiction, and speculative world-building, Griffin’s approach to The Three-Body Problem goes far beyond standard book illustration. To ground the artwork in the actual science that drives the narrative, Griffin generated the presentation box lining using real computational simulations of the three-body problem itself—tracking the chaotic orbital mechanics of three gravitational bodies in motion.
This seamless intersection of art, technology, and storytelling creates an immersive, atmospheric visual language that captures the staggering scale and scientific rigor of Liu’s universe.
A Master of Iconic Science Fiction Worlds
Griffin is no stranger to shaping the visual identity of legendary science fiction literature. Prior to The Three-Body Problem, he created the celebrated covers for the Penguin/Ace deluxe editions of all six of Frank Herbert’s Dune novels, as well as Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous With Rama for The Folio Society.
