Rattle, rattle, rattle, PSHHHHHHH . . . Rattle, rattle, rattle, PSHHHHHHH . . . This is the spray paint hum that kept me company the last ten days. I worked on my second mural ever, contributing my vision to the First Annual Old Town Alley Gallery Project. It was a blast!
The theme of this year’s gallery was “Pocatello: A Reason to Smile.” It is fashioned after Boise’s Freak Alley. For the project I chose to do a piece that incorporated a hummingbird and a lotus with Pocatello hills in the background.
In Pocatello, during the summer months, hummingbirds migrate to the area. There is even a Hummingbird Roundup at the Rudeen Ranch where the little birds are banded and released to track migratory patterns in southern Idaho. These little hummers symbolize healing, good luck, joy, love and a lightness of being, while the lotus flower is a symbol of purity and enlightenment.

I chose to use spray paint for the high color, easy application, and blending opportunities. A lot of time with a projector, masking areas with tape, and ‘just going for it’ went into the piece. I look forward to doing more of this kind of work!
The best part of this project? Meeting the other artists. Hands down, I learned so much from the other artists and our coordinator. And, I made a few friends in the process. 😉
