Cities may be built of concrete and steel, but if you take a closer look, you’ll find nature thriving in unexpected corners. The Urban Plants of Scotland and Northern England guide, published by the Field Studies Council (FSC), celebrates this quiet resilience by helping readers identify 45 plant species commonly found in urban environments—from pavement cracks and roadside verges to overlooked green spaces and garden escapees.
What makes this pocket guide particularly special is the stunning artwork by botanical illustrator Lizzie Harper, whose hand-painted illustrations bring each plant vividly to life. Known for her detailed and scientifically accurate work, Harper’s contribution ensures that each species is not only identifiable but a joy to discover.
Whether it’s a tenacious dandelion peeking through a sidewalk or a burst of color from a poppy that’s escaped the garden fence, Harper’s illustrations capture the character and key features of each plant. The accompanying text includes helpful details such as flowering times and preferred urban sub-habitats—making the guide as informative as it is beautiful.
Perfect for casual walkers, amateur botanists, educators, or anyone curious about the plant life in their city, this guide invites us to pause, look down, and appreciate the often-overlooked flora growing right beneath our feet.
