The Directory of Illustration is proud to highlight the artists who were awarded and selected for the 61st Annual Illustration West presented by The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles (SILA).

Illustration West is an annual competition and exhibition highlighting the year’s best illustration – both from L.A. and from all around the world. Details: A poster commemorating the centennial of Jazz bassist, composer and innovator Charles Mingus.

Details: Created as a promotional mailer for my studio, the image reimagines the story of the prophet Elijah at the Brook Cherith where he is served in the wilderness by ravens.

“The Batman”

Details: Illustration made to promote the release of the recent movie The Batman for the streaming platform HBO MAX. I also painted a mural based on the same image. I was inspired by the chase scene between Batman and the Penguin, using the flames in the background to place the villains inside.

Details: Personal work inspired in the “Message in a bottle” song from The Police. When we are adults, we often feel that we lose the vision of fantasy that we had as children, and that many times we need creative people so as not to lock ourselves in marked guidelines.

Details: Illustration for “The Go-and-Tell Storybook,” a book with 30 stories from the New Testament. This illustration portrays the concept of “the body of Christ,” that all Christians everywhere are essential parts of a united body, equal in dignity and contributing together to do Jesus’ work in the world.

Details: The Room is based on the author’s childhood experience and trauma as the inspiration for the creation. All the works are set in virtual buildings or special scenes, highlighting the special relevance of the protagonist to the space and expressing the repressed and ambiguous emotions, thus triggering the resonance of the audience’s emotion.
