Hannah Davies for Conde Nast Traveller Magazine

This elaborate illustration piece by Hannah Davies was created for a story featured in the June/July issue of Conde Nast Traveller about sex and travel in Mumbai, India.

The artwork displays beautifully crafted lines, suggestive of architecture, mountains, the sun & the moon, and tactile pleasures.

Yann Legendre for Star Wars 40th Anniversary

Lucasfilm commissioned Yann Legendre to illustrate 24 stickers in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Star Wars movie, A New Hope.

The stickers are available in the App Store for iMessage and come complete with all 24 illustrations featuring classic characters and lines from the film.

Shaw Nielsen for Dewar’s

Shaw Nielsen teamed up with Dewar’s to create colorful animations for this past Father’s Day.

The short GIFs feature men performing fatherly duties like mowing the lawn, fixing a car and barbecuing, all while enjoying a nice glass of Dewar’s Scotch.

Winners Announced for World Illustration Awards 2017

The Directory of Illustration, in partnership with the Association of Illustrators, is excited to announce the category winners of the World Illustration Awards.

This year’s winning entries were selected by a panel of international judges from all aspects of the industry, including publishers, artists, and commissioners such as London-based Jonathan Hubbard, Creative Director and Founder of The Clearing, Alexandra Zsigmond, Designer at the New York Times, and Matt Smith, Creative at Australian public broadcaster SBS.

Category winners include a characterful portrait of Bill Murray for the Washington Post by US-based artist, Tony Rodriguez, which was lauded by the jury for its strong composition and well executed traditional technique that captures the subject perfectly.

Also of note is Marguerite Carnac’s series ‘Lieu de Vie’ which documents the artists’ time spent volunteering in The Jungle refugee camp in Calais and was skillfully created using a monoprint technique.

All the winners will be up on display at Somerset House from July 31st until August 28th, 2017 but in the meanwhile, make sure to check out all the winners on the AOI website.

Artist Spotlight: Nathan Hale

Nathan Hale is an award-winning children’s book illustrator and author who studied illustration at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle and is known for his background in scientific and natural history illustrations.

Along with the many books he’s written and illustrated, Nathan has created work for natural history museum displays, and has painted scientific murals for museums all around the world including the Kitakyushu Science Museum in Japan.

Peter Greenwood for TIME Magazine

Peter Greenwood created illustrations that were featured in the April edition of TIME. For the artwork, he was tasked with representing the deficient bridges, tunnels, airports, and roads across America and Peter employed an overhead composition to map out the issues.

Eyewash for Mental Floss

Eyewash recently completed an assignment for Mental Floss, featuring five illustrations for an article on Clair Patterson, the scientist who determined the true age of the Earth, created the first “clean room”, and fought for decades to have lead eliminated from gasoline.

The illustrations depict moments from Patterson’s professional life: testing new automotive fuels, digging for core samples in the Artic, and scaling active volcanoes to collect air samples, among others.
